Learn what terror means to this oncology nurse diagnosed with Stage IIIa lobular breast cancer, and to several patients who also share their stories and experiences of a cancer diagnosis. Using humor and evidence-based practice, Jakel will discuss strategies for coping with terror and interventions to assist patients with their new normal. Come laugh, cry, and learn what it is like on the other side of the hospital gown.

1. Patients that are awaiting diagnosis of breast cancer will practice behaviors of enduring by preserving self. •Caregivers maintain a respectful distance from those who are enduring; using silent compassion, refrain from touching, empathic, and sympathetic statements.
2. Unsupportive Social Interactions experienced by breast cancer patients: –Bumbling- intrusive, fixing the person- offering advice, sad tone –Smothering –Over sharing –Reacting with Intense Emotion –Distancing –Minimizing- too upbeat –Blaming –Premature Grieving –Unauthorized Disclosure
3. Psychological trauma experienced during cancer treatment can lead to anxiety, depression and possibility PTSD. Patients should participate in activities that enhance coping. |
