Program Overview |
|
Managing pain is never straight forward, even with guidelines and algorithms. When high-risk patients present with special needs, our comfort level can disappear. Learn how to manage pain in patients with addiction who may have altered perceptions of pain. Investigate novel approaches for neuropathic pain when breakthrough medications only add to numbness, learn how to manage pain in the patient with sickle cell anemia, and see beyond drug-seeking behavior to provide long-term pain control.

Key Take-aways |
|
After participating in this enduring material, the participant should be able to:
1. Individuals with sickle cell disease experience recurrent vaco-occlusive crises which cause severe acute pain. Pain secondary to sickle cell disease may be acute, chronic or neuropathic in nature. Pain secondary to sickle cell disease should be managed utilizing multimodal analgesia.
2. In evaluatinng neuropathic pain, it is crucial to evaluate and properly determine the source of the patient's pain complaints to appropriatly initiate effective pharmacotherapies.
3. The success of pain management with opioids comes from the recognition that not all pain conditions are opioid responsive. Thus, multimodal therapy needs to be implemented. The implementation of risk management strategies for opioid therapy is critical because of the high risk of abuse and misuse. |
